Monarch Butterfly Festival at Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 09/22/2018
Join us at this fun, family-friendly annual event as we release 500 Monarch butterflies! Thanks to the Perennial Garden Society for purchasing these butterflies for the event.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

At the Monarch Butterfly Festival, attendees will be able to learn about the importance of the Monarch Butterfly Migration, participate in face-painting opportunities, make butterfly crafts, have fun tossing seed bombs during the costume parade, enjoy refreshments, discover local vendors, and purchase delicious meals from participating food trucks! And much more… The event is from 9:00-11:00 a.m, with the grand butterfly release happening promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Why is this event important? The number of monarch butterflies has decreased significantly over the last 20 years, but together we can save the monarch. In the United States, there is a massive effort to provide habitat for monarch butterflies, imperiled bumblebees, and other pollinators. There is no one group or agency responsible for providing the habitat needed for monarch conservation, but all organizations (such as the Perennial Garden Society), agencies, and individuals must work together to improve, restore, and create grassland habitats to save monarchs!

No matter who you are or where you live, you can get involved today. Start by planting milkweed and nectar plants that are native to your area. Garden organically to minimize your impacts on monarchs, their food plants and other pollinators. Become a citizen scientist and monitor monarchs in your area. Educate others about pollinators, conservation and how they can help.

Pre-register to join us in our 2018 celebration of the Monarch: There is no need to wait in line to sign-up for the Bob Jones Butterfly Festival! Because we want you and your family to have plenty of time to enjoy all of the exciting activities, admittance is by pre-registration only.

Our monarch festival is continuously growing, and those who attended last year can contest to a beautiful experience. This year, Bob Jones Nature Center members and individuals who pre-register beforehand will be granted access to the release and festival due to limited space. There is a $2.00 sign-up fee per person, which supports all of the other fun entertainment apart from the release that you and your loved ones will enjoy! We are reserving the opportunity to participate in the release to the first 500 pre-registered children (ages 3-14 years) old enough to understand butterflies are a delicate living creature.

Note: The grand butterfly release is firmly scheduled for 10:00 am, so please plan to arrive promptly at 9:45 for distribution! Otherwise, the Monarchs will be released and given yummy watermelon to begin their migration journey.
