A number of stars of silent cinema had difficulty maintaining their careers after the dawn of sound films. Some of them turned to the stage, some retired, some hired expensive voice coaches, and some decided to try the new medium of radio. Historian Rob Farr discusses some of these stars with rare clips of their radio performances, in some cases the only examples of their voice. Mr. Farr will be available for questions after the film.

Rob Farr teaches the History of World Cinema and early film at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He co-founded the Slapsticon, the world’s first festival devoted solely to silent and early sound comedy films. Rob contributed commentaries for several Blu-Ray/DVD sets, including Eureka’s restoration of Our Hospitality, Kino Lorber’s College, Hesperus’s versions of Mark of Zorro, Robin Hood and Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Thelma Todd & Zasu Pitts: The Hal Roach Collection 1931-33. He most recently contributed a chapter to Chase! A Tribute to the Keystone Cops and is currently working on a book on the life and films of Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Drew.
